The Netherlands declared themselves as a neutral state, meaning that they would not be involved with the war and did not choose a side. Though Germany had still attacked the Netherlands, they were occupied within a week by the Germans after attacked. The war and German occupation caused the deaths of more than 200,000 Dutch people. In 1940 there were 86,000 Jews in Amsterdam, and by 1945, there were only 10,000 Jews in this City. In the whole of Europe nearly 17 million people had died as a result of acts of war. More than 7,600 Canadians died during the campaign to liberate the Netherlands (1944-1945).  The death rate was the highest out of all the countries taken over by the Nazi’s.

One major consequence from the Liberation Of The Netherlands was that everyone was at huge risk of a famine in the Western Netherlands. Because of this, Canadian Corps stopped on paused the battle on April 22nd and negotiated a truce with the Germans to allow food supplies delivered by trucks and aircraft to come into the area, through that day to May 3rd, over tones of thousands of food were distributed throughout the area. The food stocks in all of the western parts of Netherlands ran out rapidly. This affected over 4.5 million people, even butter disappeared in October of 1944. The people of Netherlands would have to walk tens of kilometers just to be able to trade valuables for food at farms, there were over 18,000 deaths from only the malnutrition, more deaths were caused from malnutrition with other factors. The majority of their food was cheese, 100 grams of cheese was allotted every two weeks, they had meat coupons in which became useless because no one had meat to sell, the ratio of bread had dropped from 2,200 to below 1,400 grams per week. Once the agreement with the Germans to be able to bring nutrition in, there were airdrops coordinated by the Royal Air Force with food.

FAMINE

With Germany lying in ruins after six devastating years of war, the german's are left being invaded by the allies. Facing defeat, the German's surrender on May 7th, 1945. Hitler decided to take his own life. Early on the morning on April 29, 1945, in a civil ceremony in his bunker, Hitler married his mistress of many years, Eva Braun. The next day at a little after 3:30 p.m., they bit into thin glass vials of cyanide. As he did so, Hitler also shot himself in the head with a 7.65 mm Walther pistol. They did this rather than submitting to the Allies.
